Antibiotics after implant Placement: Is it needed
Mon, 08/09/2010 - 12:08 — Dr. Barbie
What is the standard of care for prescribing antibiotics after implant placement?
If antibiotics are recommended after implant placement, how long is the regimen and what is the antibiotic of choice?
If the site is infected what should you do? OR if the site is healthy what do you do?

Antibiotics Post implant surgery: No need
I dont think there is a need to prescribe antibiotics post implant surgery. Do you routinely prescribe antibiotics for extractions?
I think prescribing antibiotics routinely not only hurts the patient but can have long term affects on health care with drug resistence.
Opinions?
Antibiotics post implant surgery
There is no need to place a patient on antibiotics post implant surgery. Save the drugs for when you really need them.
Routine use of antibiotics for implant placement
I routinely use Amox 500mg post implant surgery. There is an article by dent that shows increase in success of implants if you use antibiotics.
Thoughts?
I ask patient to rinse with
I ask patient to rinse with Peridex few days before BID. one hour before the surgery pt will take 1.0 gram of Amox, Post op for 3-4 days qid.
